Revision of the American military standard: MIL-STD-461H
On 17 April 2026, MIL-STD-461G (December 2015) was superseded by MIL-STD-461H. Therefore, EMC requirements should be reviewed, particularly those relating to test configurations and the reproducibility of test results.
A notable aspect of MIL-STD-461H is that the primary focus of the revision is not on EMC test equipment itself, but rather on test set-ups, precise interface definitions, cabling, documentation, and test reproducibility. The more detailed descriptions are intended to make tests easier to understand, reproduce, and plan. For developers, this means that EMC testing should be integrated into the development process at an early stage and performed in accordance with these clearly defined procedures. This can help avoid costly rework and late-stage design modifications.
Many test requirements have been clarified. Examples include:
- Outside shielded test environments, the test set-up must be installed on a large metallic ground plane. The ground plane must extend at least 2.5 m beyond the test set-up in all directions.
- Requirements for overload testing, cabling, power supply lines, interconnecting cables, and cable routing have been described in greater detail and made mandatory.
In addition to these organizational and construction-related requirements, limit values for certain test methods have been added or clarified.
Impact on Existing Testing
The introduction of MIL-STD-461H does not automatically invalidate tests previously performed in accordance with MIL-STD-461G. However, in many cases a detailed assessment of existing test conditions is required. Test set-ups and documentation may need to be updated to ensure full compliance with the new requirements.
Recommended Test Equipment for MIL-STD-461H
For MIL-STD-461H CS114 testing, the CDG 7000-200 covering the frequency range from 100 kHz to 400 MHz is recommended in combination with the CDG 7000-200-4 accessory covering 4 kHz to 1 MHz.
Our measurement and test equipment, which already complies with MIL-STD-461G requirements, including the MGA 1033 and its associated accessories, also meets the new MIL-STD-461H specifications. Nevertheless, the standard's requirements regarding test set-ups, cabling, and documentation should be carefully observed during every test.
